Everywhere we have lived has its own interesting weather things. I think Arizona has the most interesting! Before moving there I had no clue that there was a Monsoon season in Arizona, but there is! And before I moved there I had never heard of a Haboob, but they have them, and they were my FAVORITE! About.com says this about Haboobs in Arizona:
The word "haboob" comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning “wind.” A haboob is a wall of dust as a result of a microburst or downburst. The air forced downward is pushed forward by the front of a thunderstorm cell, dragging dust and debris with it, as it travels across the terrain.
Haboobs occur mostly during the summer months in Phoenix, but are not restricted to the monsoon period. These dust storms are much more serious than dust devils. The wind during a haboob is usually up to about 30 mph and dust can rise high into the air as it blows over the Valley. A haboob can last for up to three hours.
Phoenix experiences various degrees of dust storms, but the haboob is the largest and most dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, Phoenix experiences on average about 3 haboobs per year during the months of June through September.
Well, we saw our fair share of Haboobs, and whenever I saw one, I tried to snap some photos. It is basically impossible to get the full awesomeness of it in a picture, but I tired anyway. Here are the shots I got:
Oh how I miss AZ!!
My parents and Spencer came to visit us in Scottsdale, and Spence got stuck on the roof...seriously...
July 26, 2012 our middle child, the blond one, turned 6. He chose to go swimming at the Nelson's pool, then to have cake and ice cream at our house. My cousin Nate was living in AZ for the summer and my cousin Tiffany and her husband Mike lived in AZ for Mike to attend med school while we were there as well (Wesley's cousin Nathan and his wife lived there for med school as well. It was great to have family near by! So, we invited the cousins and the friends (the Ursics) over for his cake and ice cream.
We did some school shopping and Solace found something familiar.
The other exciting thing that happened on Army's birthday was that Kindle cut her hair...oops...
Wes learned 2 very valuable lessons in Scottsdale: 1) Do NOT Drink Pepsi, 2) Do NOT leave canned soda in a car all day in Arizona in July. Or else...
The day we moved to Arizona, it was 114 degrees. We were lucky enough to have Tyson and Lindsey and their family there to help us out. Wes and I drove the moving truck from Omaha, NE. On the way there, we stopped in Colorado Springs and stayed overnight at Ty and Lindsey's house there, then they joined us and we caravan-ed the rest of the way to Scottsdale. In the mean time, my mom, who had my kids still in Utah, drove them to our new house in Scottsdale from Salt Lake. We all met up on that hot 114 degree day and unloaded a hot truck. It was really obvious, really fast that we were going to need to find ways to stay cool. And after getting our first summer AC bill of almost $700, I knew we would need to swim. A Lot. Luckily almost everyone has a pool in their backyard there. We did not, but our friends did. IN fact, we have some friends that were in our Omaha ward during med school that now live in Scottsdale. The Nelson's have a fabulous pool and they were gone for the summer. But they told us to swim there any time we wanted to.So, we took advantage of that, swan with our friends the Ursics at their pool, and got season passes to Wet N Wild. Below are some of the pictures of us at those locations!
